Construction: New Builds, Rehabs, & Home Repairs
New Builds & Rehabs
Habitat MidOhio has on-site volunteer opportunities most Tuesdays-Saturdays from 8:30AM-3:30PM. Volunteers typically work in crews of 6-10, 6 being the maximum for interior work and 10 being the maximum for exterior. No experience is required! An experienced site lead is assigned to each worksite to manage the project, teach volunteers what to do, and oversee worksite safety.
The minimum age to volunteer on site is 16. Minors must be accompanied by an adult 21 or older at a 5 to 1 ratio.
A volunteer shift for new builds and rehabs normally follows a consistent schedule, with the tasks varying depending on the phase of construction. Below is a breakdown of a typical day on site:
Home Repair
Repairs vary in task, but site leads will teach you everything you need to know. There is no experience necessary! Typically, volunteer crews on home repair work from 8:30AM-4PM, but follow a similar day structure to new builds.
The minimum age to volunteer on site is 16. Minors must be accompanied by an adult 21 or older at a 5 to 1 ratio.
Here are a couple things you should keep in mind while on site for repair projects:
- Habitat MidOhio’s repair program serves owner-occupied residences. Please remember that you are working in someone else’s home and exercise extra sensitivity.
- Habitat MidOhio’s repair program works with homeowners across a wide range of incomes, and the scope of work for each project is pre-determined and agreed upon by both the homeowner and Habitat MidOhio.
- Remember to use positive language when referring to the home (i.e. saying “replace” or “repair” rather than “tear out” or “gut”).
- Keep your work area clean of tools and debris as much as possible, and ask before venturing into parts of the home that are not in the direct work area.
- Ask permission before taking any photos on the worksite.
