Position and Years Served:
AmeriCorps Construction Crew Lead, 2019-2020
How You Found Out About AmeriCorps and First Impressions:
I reached out to Habitat MidOhio when I graduated from college. I was looking for volunteer and work opportunities. My first impression of the program was that I was going to learn a ton, very quickly. I volunteered to hang fire rated drywall off pump jacks on my first day without having any idea what pump jacks were or how heavy fire rated drywall is! But since I made it through that challenge, I knew I would enjoy the year.
Most Valuable Accomplishment:
My biggest accomplishment that year was transitioning from being a student to being a teacher. I started the year with very little experience and ended the year by being given the opportunity to finish a house almost entirely on my own. I had great teachers!
Biggest Take-Away:
My biggest takeaway from my service term was an understanding of the affordable housing crisis. It’s a cause I will continue to fight for.
Where are you now?
After my service year, I ran the Playhouse Project for a year and loved getting to continue supporting the mission of Habitat. Now, I live in Virginia Beach with my husband and work as a Project Engineer. I’m helping develop a multifamily project in Atlanta. I am a member of my local HYP chapter.
